| Washington Assessment of Student Learning: Washington's High School Assessment System: A Review of Student Performance on the WASL and Alternative Assessment Options | |
| To “increase understanding of the students who did not meet the standard in one or more areas of assessment,” the 2006 Washington State Legislature directed the Institute to conduct a “review and statistical analysis of Washington assessment of student learning data.” The study direction also calls for a review of "options to augment the current system of assessments to provide additional opportunities for students to demonstrate that they have met the state learning standards." (SSB 6618) This final report addresses both components of the Institute’s assignment. The first section summarizes performance on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) and analyzes the characteristics of students in the classes of 2008 and 2009 who have not yet met standard. The second section considers the impact of alternative assessment options on overall met-standard rates, discusses the cultural appropriateness of various student assessment options, describes the initial implementation of the Collection of Evidence (COE) option, and provides an overview of “multiple measures” assessment systems.
