WSIPP reports are not updated after publication, and any report older than two years is designated with an “Archived” label.

A Review of Obesity Treatments
In 2025, the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) contracted with the Washington State Institute of Public Policy (WSIPP) to “conduct an analysis to evaluate the effect of identified weight loss treatments on obesity, weight loss, and/or diabetes and use WSIPP’s benefit-cost model to monetize effect sizes.” The identified weight loss treatments from this agreement are behavioral/lifestyle treatment, bariatric surgery, and FDA-approved weight loss drugs. For each of the three broad treatment categories, WSIPP conducted a systematic search to identify evidence and conduct meta-analyses. For a few specific treatment types, WSIPP translated the value of benefits from these treatments into dollars using our benefit-cost model.
